Below the Surface
Below the Surface was inspired by a recent trip to the Mediterranean, including the islands of Sardinia, Ischia and the Côte d'Azur, France as well as my island home in the Pacific Northwest.
I have always been fascinated with ancient cultures, mythology, symbology, history, art and architecture from around the world.
In Marrakesh, I delighted in the colors of the desert landscape, the intricate tile patterns, the vibrant colors of handmade rugs, lighting fixtures and stunning architecture. The green oasis of hidden courtyards provide a respite in the desert heat with soothing sounds of fountains and lush foliage.
Water is a recurring theme in my work with its beauty, power and depth. I love to watch the changing colors that create patterns of light and dark in in the rocky shallows, smooth rocks sparkling below the surface beneath my feet with the light shimmering off the surface on a sun filled morning.
The Sunken Palace series are an exploration of the Basilica Cistern in Istanbul, an underground aquifer built in the 6th century AD which include 336 columns and two Medusa heads found at ancient Greek and Roman temples that stand as sentries to this watery world of reflections and atmospheric lighting.
Growing up in Seattle, spending summers in and on Lake Washington, Puget Sound and the beaches near my relatives in Southern California. My adventurous, athletic and inquisitive family enjoyed hiking the lush landscape of the Pacific Northwest. I feel fortunate to have my work is in many private collections in California, WA DC, Seattle and San Francisco. My last exhibit was nominated for the most successful show in 2024 at Sotheby's, Bainbridge Island, WA.
My background includes a BFA from the University of Washington and a degree in Interior Design.
